A Lot Can Happen in 30 Seconds

Yesterday kicked off the BYU football season, so we headed up to Grandma and Grandpa's house to watch the game. Since we lived there for a year and a half Spencer is quite comfortable and runs the house. We all were a little bit too comfortable.

All the family crams into the tv room with the flat screen to watch the game while Spencer runs in and out with toys. Uncle Jason was in the kitchen keeping an eye on the pizzas in the oven. Spencer was in the kitchen and Uncle Jason ran to the tv room for a few seconds to say something to the family. Upon his return to the kitchen we all heard a "Nooo!"

Spencer found a bottle of Grandma's pain pills. While we lived there we were very cautious of pills but our guard was down for a moment. None of Grandma's pill bottles are "child proof" since she can't open the bottle if it is. The bottle was already mostly empty due to Grandma already using them. We are estimating that there were under five pills scattered over the stove and counter. We have no idea how many pills were left in the bottle before Spencer got to it. I quickly tackled Spencer to search his mouth. I couldn't find any trace of a chewed up pill. Still, to be sure, we called poison control.

Since the pain pills had codeine in them and we didn't know if Spencer had any let alone more than one or two...we went to the ER. If Spencer were to have ingested two pills, he would become drowsy, fall asleep and stop breathing. Even though I knew deep down that he did not take a pill, I would not have slept all night if we didn't take him to the ER.

The ER was not busy...the nurses were all joking that this was a good time to come to the ER. We were taken care of quickly and had to wait for two hours so Spencer's blood could be tested to see if there was any medicine in his system.

They had trouble finding a vein through his chub little hands, but did eventually. Once the vein was found and poked Spencer said "hurt" and then we sat there for about 2 minutes while the blood was slowly collected. He was such a trooper and we couldn't be more proud of him.

After waiting over a half and hour for the results, we were informed that he had no trace of medicine in his system....just as I suspected. Better safe than sorry, we headed home and all were in bed at 10:00.

I am grateful that it was an uneventful trip to the ER.
Sorry this post is choppie, I was trying to keep it short.
